What IS a Vegetable Garden?

CESTINO DI VERDURE Pictures, Images and Photos

It seems like such an easy question, but, the answer is just not that easy.

A vegetable garden being a garden of vegetable plants is only the most obvious, partial, inadequate answer. It really is so much more. It is a source of peace and joy. It should be part of who you are, at least for part of the year. It’s where you can have your (carrot) cake and eat it, too.

But, that all important but, it can be a source of frustration and disappointment. It does not have to be that way. Get good advice.

Don’t plant just one vegetable seed and expect to get a vegetable garden. One good seedling will not give you the satisfaction of a full-blown gourmet, fresh-picked, meal. Many questions will come to your mind when garden plans enter your vocabulary like a song that someone nearby hummed and now you can’t get it out of your head.

•What to plant?

•How big of an area?

•Fertilizer?

•Organic?

•What is hydroponics?

•Can I freeze it?

•How do I can it?

The list goes on, and on, and on. Or maybe you just want some further advice to tweak what you already know.

You’ve Come to the Right Place

Grow-YOUR-Vegetable-Garden.com is the place to ask your questions, find your answers, tell your stories, post your pictures, get ideas for your vegetable garden, look at some tools, and to suggest more ideas for topics about YOUR vegetable garden. You might even be invited to write an article or two to help others.

So, whether you have zero vegetable garden knowledge or you are like a walking encyclopedia, you’ve come to the right place.

Many have asked,

•Can I grow one in a small place?

•On a balcony?

•On a roof-top?

•In the city?

•In an apartment?

•In the basement?

Yes to all of those questions.

•How big is a garden before it is considered to be a farm? I don’t know the answer to that question. What do you think?

•Do I have the skills?

•Do I have the time?

•Do I have the resources?

You’ve come to the right place for answers. You’ve come to the right place for encouragement and advice. Yes, YOU can grow a culinary delight with your own hands.

Why Does This Site Exist?

Will this site help feed the world? Probably not. Will it help YOU eat better/healthier? More than likely.

This site exists to share knowledge without being preachy. The joy of gardening is not for everybody. Oh well. Having information to improve your goings on, having a sense of humor, not taking yourself too seriously, and having realistic expectations will make life a little better for you.

Try not to over analyze what you need to get started—this page is a start. Things will grow. (I did not put vegetables there, because other things will grow, too.) I like growing things; it fills me with satisfaction. Some years did not go very well. This year, 2010, my radishes looked and tasted like an experiment using toxic waste. Some factors I can’t, and you can’t, control.

Planting vegetables has taught me to diversify, such as planting things I don’t even like to eat just so I can give it away to others. You also just need to try something new every now and then. A packet of seeds is relatively inexpensive. Who knows, you just might find something you like just because of the way it looks. I found recipes for zucchini that I actually like. Some neighbors have even asked when I’m going to make some more for them!

Some items may fall into the area of opinion (oh, my). Be that as it may, keep an open mind as you look around. Look for something to make you smile. The world is full of nay-sayers yelling that it can’t be done. But you CAN grow your vegetable garden. Are you smiling yet?
